type='text'>Christmas in our Baranggay

Days were so fast. Nights were getting colder.
It just signals one thing.
It's Christmas Season once again.

It gets me excited whenever the season comes. I go to our province in Mati to celebrate it with my family and relatives.

I began waking-up early for an early mass. As a part of our PASTORAL YOUTH ASSOC., it is in our job that we call "pamukaw" wherein all youth are requested to wake up early and bring any sound equipments to use for waking up the sleeping night. I could not explain the wonderful experience being with them, as we all together share our laughters and fun.

Though, it's not in the family tradition to give gifts during Christmas(some may). I can still feel the love and warmth of each presence in the gathering. It gives me joy when i see the family together with other relatives eat in one table sharing the goodness of the year thay have brought them.

Another thing that i like about our Christmas is our tradition of "parol dancing". By the end of the Simbang Gabi, there are prepared "parols" hang on the church' ceiling. After the mass, the parols are manipulated as if they were dancing. I can imagine the intensity of the children seeing the dancing stars. All amazed of what they saw.

Hmmmm....Truly, Christmas in the Philippines is incomparrable.

A treat for myself..

Before the Christmas break, I promised myself to have something special for myself. I guess, I deserved myself a treat, after experiencing a stressful work of studying for exams, finishing my projects and reading a lot of study materials.

Sunday night,I and my friends, decided to have a dinner together at BOODELS.After which, we've decided to have a coffee break at KASAGINGAN, Torres.

I thought, we will just end that way but we have decided to pamper ourselves out of a rainy christmas season.

We ended to Asian Massage fronting GMALL. I was like so surprise of the trip. Like it was my first time to a massage thing and definitely feeling tense.

Not to mention the details inside the room and what had happened, i would agree that it was unexplainable for me to decribe the feeling.

As the masseur said, " Lahat ng nangyari sa loob ay sana sa loob na lang."

On GUERILLA FILMS

I just found myself watching films lately out of boredom. Luckily and disappointingly, i have watched Guerilla Films (Mindanao film festival), one of the cinema i have anticipated to watch.

Luckily?
- because i have seen a lot of potentials in mindanao in terms of producing films featuring stories of Mindanao even with a low cost of production.

Disappointingly?
-because of the low-depths plot on their creations.

Let's start on assessing the different short films included in the fesival.

Let's take note that in producing a short film or any other film, one must see to it that the plot used must directly connect and affect human interest and should be odd to make it peculiar from the other.

I would like to commend the film "MUKHA" for bringing another gay story in the Mindanao scene, however, when we look closely to the theme of the film, it doesn't touched the very essence of living a gay in a hell world. It doesn't capture the sufferings and pains of fags in a wider perspective.

Second, let us see to it that cinematic images must have an organizing effect on the eyes of the audiences. On the film ,BADJAO, which i thought an interesting and unique plotted-story, has a lot of cinematic flaws, i mean a lot. One can see JAO giving a piece of money and on the next scene you can see the landlord handling it many. Also, what was the sister of Jao doing in front of his house? etc.etc.etc...

Third, a film must have a focus. MARSOKWATRO, i admit that it was beautifully cinematographed, the film lacked focus. You will get confused who got the lead role, the reporter? the terrorist? the family?

Fourth, a film must co-incide with the theme of the musical score to the happenings on the scene. BADJAO has a lot of flaws in using SFX. You can hear disco music in the middle of intense scene.

A lot of requirements must be considered to have a film considerable to the interest of the audiences.

I have attended the GUERILLA AWARDS NIGHT at Damosa Gateway and there was no declared BEST FILM.

The reason?

The judges agreed to declare no winner because they want to challenge movie makers to have a well-done films. They are setting the bar higher to have a more challenging film in the next festival.

The judges were correct. Their message was clear. They were not impressed nor satisfied with what they saw. The films does not convert to the standards of quality films. It is more of quantity.(PEACE!)

NOTE: According to my teacher in Film Appreciation, Bong Eliab, Films are for public consumption, therefore, it is liable for critique and must be criticized. Don't be shy to critique a film, We have all the RIGHT!

KOLORETE

I just finished doing my information-commercial for my subject in Non-linear Video Editing. I'm happy i have captured the message i wanted with the perfect SFX(Sound Effects) and VFX(Video Effects).

I titled my commercial "kolerete". Embodying the symbol of homosexual's symbol to beautify themselves, "make-up". The comparison of applying make-up is seen similar to the risk a gay have to sacrifice. In the end, one cannot succumb to just let the injustices in the world and break the reflection which identify the gayness of him. If you don't understand what am i talking, i will post it in the youtube for you to see.

At this point, i would like to thank the following person who made this project a success.
JAREL ENRIQUEZ- Actor
Manong E
Kuya Bogs-For assisting the technicals
MC3A and B-supportive classmates
HUm division-for the facilities
SIR IAN GARCIA-mentor and teacher

FILIPINO WOMEN WON

The clamor of the people holding a picket rally at freedom park in Roxas was the same with the heat brought by the sun last Dec. 4,2006. It was in support to Nicole, a Filipina raped-by US militaries in Subic months ago. (Nicole, who was incidentaly lived Davao and an Atenean, filed a case against the military men who raped her.) We have decided to join the rally to show sympathy. The groups were from Gabriela, a women's party advocating for gender equality and took care on women's and children's rights.

I am happy that Nicole made it. At least, she has proven that she was telling the truth.

The victory of Nicole's battle is the victory of all Filipino women. This is a good start for the Filipino women's long conviction of supression on a macho-culture of the country and the rest of the world. This is also a proof that justice is still alive in the spirit of democracy in a country laid by political and social chaos.

Also, I would like to express my DEEP DISAPPOINTMENT to all Filipinos who have not believe Nicole from the day she screamed for justice. Woe to those people who don't beleive in the capacity of women's strength to relive her dignity. Woe to them who patronized the western culture and blinded by their foolish culture.

MABUHAY ANG MGA BABAE!

CINE EUROPA

I have attended a forum last Nov. 30, 2006 in our school about the cultural specifities on the films of Europe which launched the CINE EUROPA the following the day at GS Mall Illustre. Cine Europa is an annual event showcasing the different cultures of the countries included in the European Union including Finland, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Czech Rep., etc.. through films.

Aside from socializing with the BIG and BOLD (Ambassadors and Politicians)personalities from different countries during the premiere night, I was able to watched the film ONE WAY TICKET TO MOMBASA, a 2-hr film from Finland showcasing two characters of ironic personalities. I don't wanna give details of what had happened in the whole duration of the film because you might have the chance to see it in the future.

All I can say, the Film ONE WAY TICKET TO MOMBASA, though weak in plot and character development, the film perfected its beauty in giving the audience an alluring effects on its cinematographic design. It's beautiful concept of Momasa justified the dreams of two young men and made it worthy to see.

Cine EUROPA ran 3days on GS Mall theaters with a free admission, that is why we have not wasted our chance to see. We started at 11:00 am and ended 3:00pm

The following are the film we have seen along with my friend and the some remarks:

WHEN THE SEA RISES(Belgium)-1 hour film. Lousy Actors and weak plot. Beautiful musical score.

ZELARY(Czech Rep)-beautiful story, Unrealistic musical effects, excellent cinematography, good set design

SIMON(Netherlands) -the story disappoints me, it does not capture the real sense of Euthanasia and Gayness of a person.

After all, I am still happy to see the different cultures if the world in the glimpse of the films i saw. In Belgium, they have a festivity similar to our Higantes Festival. The Same sex marriage in Netherlands and many more.

HONESTLY SPEAKING

Things can never be just the way they are. It changes and mind does.

At this point, i want to express my disappointment to the decision of our Division Chairperson regarding our planned Cebu Trip come December. It's not that i am saying that she is wrong and I am right but the sad note is if when was already set, prepared and ready it is when she declared that we can't go for some reasons. I mean there are always reasons for those who prohibits.

First, on her ground of SECURITY. I believe that death comes at any time and any place. If it is your time to die then let it be. It is just a matter of destiny. If the bomb is planted on the plane we are going to take then we can't stop it and we cannot do something to stop it from exploding. We cannot predict terrorism. It comes in any form at anytime. As my teacher said, "LIFE is THE OTHER SIDE OF DEATH and DEATH is THE OTHER SIDE OF LIFE!"

Second, FINANCE. That is the purpose of having a solicitation letter to lessen the amount of transportation fare we are going to pay. We have search for the cheapest possible way like riding a bus going to Cagayan and Ferry to Cebu just to minimize the finance needed in the trip.

Going back to my disappointment, what was disheartening was the unfair treatment of the Dean of the University to the division. Why the Political Science students allowed to go to Malacanang last summer> The IS students to other parts of the world? Where in fact, it is more expenseive and far than our CEBU.

In my 3 years of being in the Mass Communication Department, I always hear comments from the teacher like MassCom Graduates from Ateneo are not good because they are only taught of theories and principles, they do not know the language of the masses and they can't speak to it, they cannot write a substantial straight news reporting and so on...Now, I think it's time to break this stereotype and this can only be achieve trough teaching them a balance education. Balance in theories and application. It's time to go out and search for the real action the way a real journalist or a broadcaster should be.

As what i am always saying to my friends, " REAL EDUCATION ARE NOT ONLT TAUGHT INSIDE THE FOUR CORNERS OF THE CLASSROOM, BUT OUTSIDE WHERE REALITY WELCOMES US."

BUSY

It's disappointing how I gradually change my living culture the way I used to. At that time, I just can’t comprehend why we need to participate in such activities and why not just learn lesson inside the classroom. My preferred manong mango vendor outside Assumption College even asked me once how come I am not like the other students who are radical in thinking. That time again, I believe I am having culture shock.

One day, I just woke up to the culture of not being afraid of the authorities, instead, I was pressured to act independently from them and be very keen on seeing unscrupulous actions and dealings to government officials. I was honed in a school they brand as the little UP where true education is not learned inside the four corners of the room but outside. I was immersed to a society where tolerance is power, and submission is cowardice. Screaming slogans and waiving banners are my only weapon to conquer in the battlefield.

When I reached college in and still carrying with me the principles and idealisms that are taught to me, I taught I would be with the same environment I used to with the real and sensible student I met in high school, but I was totally wrong. Atenean culture, not assuming all, is purely apathy and nothing but elitism.

What frightens me most is that there are few students who thought of fighting for something else. But of course, I knew for myself, that they actually don’t know the whole story, yet willing to shed tears and contest their opinions.

It was a sad realization, indeed.

But what saddened me more was that, I saw I wasn’t alone with my predicament. Many had died fighting for their beliefs. Yet among them were in doubt.

Then why they bother for something they do not fully comprehend? Why waste time and effort to something they thought as futile? Why do they stand for something doomed for ruin?

This has been in my mind for quite some time now. I was thinking, Are they that susceptible to follow what is common rather than chose their own path? Do they tend to equate majority with what is right? Are they just who follows, and not leads?

Spending years in Ateneo corrupts any personality into begetting unjust economic structures, a disposition that finds fertile ground to a passive studentry.

College should not be strictly academics; a real scholastic honor knows liberal education. Awards do have their merits. But if achievement of these results to a insensitivity and indifference to the plight of the masses, education has failed.

EDUCATION FOR SALE!
Buy it at the most expensive school near you.

“The state shall protect and promote the right of all citizens to quality education at all levels and shall take appropriate steps to make education accessible to all.”
Article 14 Sec. 1 1987 Constitution

There is a worsening crisis in the educational system. Year after year, tuition fees across the nation are jacked up to provide quality education.

This blatant display of commercialization signals the entry of education into the market forces as provided in the myopic education plan of the present regime.

Thus, the commercial, colonial, and repressive characteristics of our educational system are maintained.

The educational system is commercialized because high tuition and miscellaneous fees determine the parameters in getting quality education. As profit-oriented educators run the show, education becomes more and more a privilege for a few.

The educational system is colonial because it caters to the need for a cheap, skilled and obedient manpower for the multinational and transnational corporations. As students drop out, more vocational schools are built to absorb them and to churn out a labor force for these corporations. Textbooks often conform to Western setting and despite findings that students learn faster in the native tongue, English is still used as a medium of instruction.

The educational system is repressive because the regime suppresses students who struggle for their welfare and rights inside and outside the school. Non-recognition of mass orgs, clamping down student publications, controlling student councils and the contractualization and retrenchment of faculty members are indications that the regime is intent on molding passive students to anti-people policies.

With these situations, it is evident that the present government has failed to perform its purpose of uplifting the sate of the education in the country. Instead, it has been one with the educator-capitalist of stealing hard-earned money from our parents and has never upheld student’s rights and welfares. With this continuing degradation of the country’s educational system, primarily because of the lack of utmost support from the government itself, no wonder, years from now, our country will be a pool of drug addicts, pushers, and prostitutes.

The present regime provides a hopeless future for the students and youth. The only way is to militantly struggle for genuine freedom and democracy, for a nationalist, scientific, and mass oriented education.

A nationalist education upholds the dignity and independence of the Filipino people from imperialist rule. It is geared toward propagating national consciousness, an awareness of the interest of the majority and a genuine desire to serve the majority.

A scientific education pursues the development of science and technology in service of national interest. It seeks national industrialization and agrarian reform to achieve economic emancipation and self reliance.

A mass-oriented education that is based on the needs of the majority. It is expressive of the struggle and aspirations of the Filipino majority and is democratic, participatory, free and accessible regardless of socio-economic class.

Now, more than ever, the students should actively fight to expose the decadent nature of the system and to fight militantly against it.

PS: This is one my favorite articles characterizing Philippine Educational Sysytem in the country.

                                                                                                                                        EDUCATION FOR SALE!
Buy it at the most expensive school near you.

“The state shall protect and promote the right of all citizens to quality education at all levels and shall take appropriate steps to make education accessible to all.”
Article 14 Sec. 1 1987 Constitution

There is a worsening crisis in the educational system. I felt guilty whenever they will demand to see my company and i could not come because of a busy schedule in school. That's why, when Richard texted the night before saturday, i comitted! Yes, i missed my friends a lot especially that we have a special relationship together. We have dreams we want to achive and we have set common interests. So much for that, i groomed hurriedly seeing i am late for a commitment of 3:00pm, well, Richard used to it. I arrived at the mall in a 10mins travel. Gaisanao Mall in Davao City is one of our favorite hangouts because it is near to ours and theirs school (SPC and Ateneo). We met at the 3rd Floor which they call Spazio. Everyone noticed the excitement we feel to see each other because we almost shouted. It's like how many years we separate from each other. Well, Richard changed a lot physically. He is thin but i noticed he gets thinner. Maybe because of the course he took up which is nursing, this course requires a lot of really WORK aside from STUDY and DUTY!! Well, after which, we strolled around the mall and we decided to eat at DIMSUm DINER! We have a lot of fun together at the mall. In as much as i loved to stay with him more but i have to excuse myself for another apointment which leads to my second reason of excitement.

Second, I seen BABAYI(woman)

I am always fascinated to see or play a role in a theater show. The President of my org TEATRONG ATENISTA, Ate Ching Ocon invited me over to watch their play entitled BABAYI which showed at Mini Cap Auditorium 6:00pm. That's why, i decided to watch. Babayi is a cebuano term for WOMAN. The play is a satiric and comdeic presentation about the portrayal of women in the society. It is a theatric presentation of the compilation of songs, poem and monologues on women arranged by Mr. Nonoy Narciso who is also the Director. One of the fascinating elements of the play is the live playying of ethnic background music throughout the duration of the play. Also, the actors and actresses of the play is nontheless excellent in the role they portrayed. The play shows strong emotions and captured my feeling being a feminist activist. It shows the reality of women's image in a dramatic and sometimes comical way. It made me realized the different pains ang sufferings of being branded as a woman in the society. I realized...IF IT IS HARD TO BECOME A GAY! HOW MUCH MORE BEING A WOMAN WHOM WE LIKE TO BECOME! Well, culture as it may seem, but for me, let usa not just be deaf an d mute of this culture that decimates our being human. Let us break this culture of heirachy before man dominates world!

I finished my day a lot of lesson learned. Hope you learned something!

The picture from the top is my bessy Richard!

From between is a scene from the play BABAYI!
